"Breen-6902, hollow ring atop second stripe. On the reverse shield, a hollow ""ring"" is noted at the top of the second double-line stripe, a fact brought to the notice of collectors in Breen��s Encyclopedia (1988). However, Breen��s comments of 1988 have since been superseded by those of Douglas Winter who observed: ""it has generally been assumed that two varieties exist; one with a normal shield and one with a hollow ring on the reverse as on the 1851. I��ve never seen an 1852-O eagle which did not have the ring on the reverse, and I��m not certain that a normal reverse exists."" Either way, this variety always evokes great interest. Highly lustrous yellow-gold with soft green accents in the fields. A nicely struck example, one that is typically found at VF or lower grades, with coins at XF or finer considered to be rare. Indeed, just 18,000 pieces were struck, with the majority of those doing heavy commercial duty in New Orleans and abroad. A choice specimen for the grade, one that should see excited bidding activity."
