BUYING AND SELLING:
Many firms are eager to talk to you when you are buying rare coins or bullion but
not all firms are as excited to entertain your questions when it comes time to capture
any gains from your investment. Establishing a relationship with a firm that can
guide you in the liquidation of your investments is an extremely important component
to successful bullion and rare coin investing.
One of the most exciting times in collecting rare coins is the liquidation process.
Superior Precious Metals, Inc. is proud to be a subsidiary of Superior Galleries,
Inc., one of the largest numismatic auction houses in the world. Tracing our history
to 1930 Superior Galleries combines a unique blend of industry expertise and financial
strength in support of our complete range of services. From consultation to acquisition
to liquidation, Superior Galleries has a proven track record for realizing maximum
value for its clients.
Investment in anything has inherent risk and it is important to make educated and
researched investment decisions. Bullion and rare coins are no different.
Customer satisfaction is of paramount importance to Superior Precious Metals. For
this reason we offer a 10-day inspection period on all numismatic items. Carefully
inspect and evaluate your coins during this period.

Over the years, we’ve developed a great deal of experience in acquiring hard assets
for investors’ portfolios. We’ve worked with highly experienced investors and people
who are making their very first hard asset purchase. We’ve worked with many people
on an exclusive basis as well as some who work with multiple firms. Given our wide
range of clients, we’ve developed some strong opinions on how a firm involved in
the sale of precious metals and rare coins should conduct themselves. Certainly,
we hope you choose Superior Precious Metals when it comes time to buy, sell or trade
rare coins, gold, silver, platinum or palladium.
Financial analysts classify gold as a “hard asset, meaning that it has value in
and of itself. Stocks, bonds, and even cash are categorized as “soft assets because
their value is dependent upon your faith in a third party to support the value of
the asset.
Investing in rare coins and numismatics is very exciting but more importantly can
be very profitable. Everyday Superior Precious Metals matches novice collectors,
rare coin investors and professional numismatists with the high quality rare coins
and precious metals that meet their portfolio’s needs.
Many traditional equity investments have seen rapidly decreasing prices over the
last several years. Since the passing of the Tax Payer Relief Act in 1997, you can
now include fold and other precious metals as a part of your retirement portfolio
holdings. As a result, many investors are turning to precious metals IRAs as a way
to diversify their retirement investments against the roller coaster changes they
see in their dollar denominated assets like stocks and bonds.
As the name indicates, commemorative coins were issued by the United States Mint
by specific order of Congress at various times to celebrate some special occasion
or event of importance. As such, they are considered an integral and important part
of the history of this nation.
While researching this subject online, I found little useful information about how
a person that is new to numismatics might be educated in forming a collection of
America’s most widely collected series of coins, silver dollars. Although some Lincoln
cent collectors might argue this point, over the past 37 years as a professional
numismatist, when the subject of coins arises at virtually any venue, invariably
everyone’s first point of discussion has something to do with a silver dollar. In
fact, this author still has the first coin he ever collected, an 1887-O silver dollar
obtained for $1.00 from a magazine vendor at Grand Central Station in New York City.
Large cents are one of America’s most widely collected series of copper coins. This
is due, in part, to their large size, attractive designs, and general affordability,
particularly when circulated examples form the basis of the collection. Large cents
were minted from 1793 to 1857 and utilized seven basic designs: Flowing Hair – 1793
only, Liberty Cap – 1793 to 1796, Draped Bust – 1796 to 1807, Classic Head 1808
to1814, Matron Head 1816 to 1836, Modified Matron Head 1837 to 1839, and Braided
Hair 1839 to 1857.
When the subject of collecting gold coins is discussed, most often the subject centers
around later U.S. issues such as Saint-Gaudens double eagles, the incused Indian
half and quarter eagles, or the long-lived Liberty issues. People frequently communicate
stories about how their grandmother saved one of these coins after receiving it
for a birthday or Christmas gift years ago. These coins are widely collected for
type sets and are generally available in the current numismatic marketplace.
Coins and medals are popular items to collect. Often there are family histories
and anecdotes connected to these objects. Because of their small size, coins and
medals are easy to store without requiring too much space. Traditionally, coins
have been made from three metals and their alloys: gold, silver, and copper. The
alloys vary: silver or copper in gold coins, copper in silver ones, and tin or zinc
in copper coins. This last group is often referred to as "bronzes." In recent years,
additional metals — iron, aluminum, and copper-nickel alloys — have been used in
coin production.
This 124 page book was written by Superior Galleries to provide numismatic and precious
metals investors with foundation material essential to successful participation
in these dynamic markets. Abundant historical and factual material is covered, and
the book is well illustrated with pictures of important coins, prominent places
in numismatic history, graphs and charts. Included are five chapters: A Brief History
of U.S. Coins, Coin Collecting Events & Coin Hoards, Precious Metals & Markets,
The Hobby of Collecting, and The Future of Coin Collecting.
